Why do we need to wear laser protective eyewear?
When we are using a laser, it will emit specific wavelengths, or several wavelengths of radiation at the same time.
Some of these wavelengths we can see normally, and some of them are invisible light, such as ultraviolet light and
infrared light. Invisible light does not mean that our eyes will not be harmed. Ultraviolet light (100-400nm) can
cause damage to the cornea, and laser wavelengths from 400nm-1400nm can penetrate the lens and damage
the retina, causing irreversible damage to our eyes. laser wavelengths above 1400 mm are relatively safe, but we
can still damage our eyes when we work in a high-power laser environment. For example, most high power fiber
lasers, carbon dioxide lasers are invisible lasers, yet require laser protective eyewear for protection.
Due to the focusing properties of the eye, which is 100,000 times more sensitive to laser light than the skin,
prolonged exposure to laser radiation can lead to slow damage to our eyes and even blindness. The function of
laser filters is to protect the eyes from specific wavelengths by attenuating the specific wavelengths or lowering
them below the Maximum Permissible Exposure (MPE) value (Maximal Possible Effect).
